Couple-Specific Policies
For couples sessions, I will typically only meet with each partner individually during our second meeting. It is important to remember that I do not keep secrets between partners, in other words, you cannot swear me to secrecy from the other partner. Please keep this in mind before disclosing information to me. Following the first 2 sessions, I will offer my recommendations for treatment going forward.. Each couples’ situation is different and we will collaborate to identify how to overcome your problems by creating specific goals for therapy.
If we have scheduled a couples session, I will not meet with only one partner and if a partner is late, we will wait on the other partner before proceeding with session.
FEES. 60-minute couples sessions are self-pay at $125. I cannot accept insurance due to couples therapy not meeting necessary billing criteria for insurance & can blur the lines of medical records with an identified client. If you would like to schedule longer intensive sessions, please let me know and we can discuss options.
RELEASE OF INFORMATION. In order to release information in regards to couples therapy, I will need written releases from both of you. I will sometimes ask to speak with one or both of your individual therapists or previous therapists; however, I will need both of you to sign a release in order to do this.
Therapy Orientation
I utilize a family systems lens, which explores & considers the relationships/systems/networks that may be holding the problem in place. I often integrate EMDR, narrative, solution-focused, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills, and parts therapy techniques into sessions if appropriate. In your first session, we will consider what techniques may be the most effective to help you make process, as well as revisit as needed.

I have completed EMDRIA approved EMDR training and often incorporate this approach in sessions. EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. EMDR is an evidence-based treatment that utilizes bilateral stimulation to target distressing life experiences to promote reduction in problematic symptoms (flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, etc). I utilize narrative therapy's approach to view people as separate from their problems, as well as consider clients the expert of their own lives. I often hold this quote from Narrative Therapy founder, Michael White, "the person is not the problem, the problem is the problem."

AKA parts work/ego state/internal family systems (IFS). This type of therapy considers the "parts" of yourself that may be holding or contributing to the problem at hand. Parts can be considered to have particular needs and sometimes these needs can be unmet, leading to distress within the internal system. The goal of therapy is to identify parts, their need, and to respond to their need appropriately and with understanding. I offer skills teaching of DBT skills that support distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These skills are evidence based and can support Clients in increasing their window of tolerance to prevent unhealthy or unsafe reactions to triggers.
